Startup & Pre-Revenue Financial Models

A startup financial model projects revenue, cost and cash for a company without meaningful history, building the forecast from unit economics rather than from a growth percentage. Investors read it to test whether the founder understands their own business.

What investors actually check

Not the revenue line. They check whether the revenue line is derived — from customers, conversion, price and retention — or simply typed in and grown by a percentage. A model built bottom-up from unit economics can be argued with; one built top-down cannot be defended.

They also check the runway calculation, because it tells them how long their money lasts and when the next round has to happen.

Frequently asked questions

What should a startup financial model include?
A bottom-up revenue build from unit economics, a fixed and variable cost structure, monthly burn and runway, a fundraising scenario showing dilution, and base/upside/downside cases — all driven from a visible assumptions tab.
How many years should a startup model project?
Three to five years, monthly for the first eighteen to twenty-four months and annually thereafter. Monthly detail early is what makes the runway calculation meaningful.
What is runway?
The number of months the company can operate before cash reaches zero at the current burn rate. It is the single number most investors check first.
